Why build in wood?

Over the past century, buildings have been constructed primarily from steel and concrete—but the greenhouse gas emissions associated with these materials are enormous: 3% of the world’s energy is used in steel production and 5% in concrete production.

Although most people think that transportation is the main contributor to CO2 emissions, the construction sector is actually the biggest offender, accounting for 47% of CO2 emissions.

Using wood in construction can help reduce emissions associated with conventional building materials. Wood is the renewable resource with the lowest carbon footprint compared to any alternative building material.

In addition, the carbon stored in wood—which was absorbed from atmospheric CO2 through photosynthesis—is partially preserved when the wood is used as a building material, making it an excellent long-term carbon sink. Each metric ton of wood used in construction can store up to 1 metric ton of CO2.

Another question people often ask about wood construction is about the potential danger of

deforestation. At Toscca, we work exclusively with wood sourced from certified and sustainable forests, ensuring that our practices adhere to strict environmental, social, and economic standards.

In addition, recent studies show that, by following a policy of responsible forest management, North America produces enough wood to construct a 20-story building every 13 minutes.
